Life-Saving Hospital Care in Rural Communities Is At Risk.

Lawmakers are considering legislation that will cut payments to hospitals and health systems, harming rural, low-income and the sickest patients who count on hospitals for health care.

For hospitals already struggling to recover from years of dealing with the COVID public health emergency, increased pressure from inflation and continuing workforce issues, additional cuts will not relieve any of these pressures – instead, proposed cuts would lead to devastating financial hardship, reduced access to essential services and programs and could cause more hospitals to close.

Cuts in the form of rate-setting, like those in proposed legislation, would allow insurers to set the payment for hospitals and keep the profit for themselves. Congress must recognize the vital role of hospitals, especially in rural communities, and stand up for the most vulnerable patients.

The Rural Hospital Crisis
  • Since 2005, nearly 200 rural hospitals have been closed or converted.
  • More than 600 rural hospitals – nearly 30 percent of all rural hospitals in the country – are at risk of closing. Many of these are critical access or service underserved communities.

Hospital cuts would put access to essential services provided by hospitals and health care systems at risk, including:

24/7 access to rural emergency care

Standby capability and capacity for disaster response

Convenient access to care for the most vulnerable and medically complex beneficiaries

Access to cancer care for patients with chronic conditions

Take Action:

Protect hospitals and access to the life-saving care they provide to patients in rural communities across America.
